Yanbu is the Red Sea coast’s underrated alternative to Jeddah – offering world-class coral reefs, quiet public beaches, a heritage old town, and a working fish market, all without the crowds of the big city. This guide covers what to see, how to get there (honest drive times, not a quick-hop promise), and how to book a private driver so your day trip is about the destination, not the drive.
Is Yanbu worth visiting?
Yes – for divers, beach-day families, and heritage explorers who want a genuine coastal town experience. Yanbu is not a polished resort destination; it is a working port and industrial city with genuinely excellent natural assets on its doorstep. The appeal depends on what you come for:
- Divers & snorkellers – Yanbu’s coral reefs (Al Fasma, Seven Sisters) are among the most pristine in the Red Sea, with visibility frequently 20-30 metres. The dive operators here are serious, professional, and equipped.
- Beach-day families – Royal Commission Beach offers turquoise water and soft white sand without entrance fees. The ~11 km corniche is a free, family-friendly waterfront.
- Culture visitors – Yanbu Al-Balad (old town) has coral-stone heritage buildings, a small museum, and a fish market that is liveliest at dawn.
The honest distance: ~300-330 km / 3.5-4 hours each way from Jeddah. A same-day round trip is a long day (10-12 hours with the driver-guided card). For a relaxed dive weekend, overnight is the better plan. This guide gives you the real numbers so you can decide.
Top things to do in Yanbu
Diving & Snorkelling
Yanbu’s coral reefs are the best reason to make the trip. The water is clear, the marine life is abundant, and the sites range from shallow beginner-friendly snorkel spots to advanced reef walls.
Al Fasma coral reef (~6 km north of Sharm Yanbu marina): a shallow reef wall starting at ~5 metres with hard coral gardens, angelfish, parrotfish, and occasional sea turtles. Beginner-friendly snorkel site. Guided boat trip from the marina.
Seven Sisters Reef (~40 km out, ~70 min by boat): a series of pinnacle reefs with hammerhead sharks, grey reef sharks, and Abu Galawa grottos. Visibility frequently 20-30 metres. This is an advanced site for experienced divers.
Dive operators (we provide transport, not the water leg):
- Yanbu Diving – run day trips from Jeddah (hotel transfer included) and from Sharm Yanbu marina. Snorkel tours from ~$100-330/person; Discover Scuba from ~$295-235/person.
- Diving Bubbles (PADI 5-star), Blue Diver, Dream Divers – full-service operators based in Yanbu.
Best dive season: October-April (water 24-27°C, peak visibility November-March). Summer water is warmer but air temperatures above 40°C make non-dive time challenging.
Getting to the dive boats: our day-tour card provides door-to-door transport to Sharm Yanbu marina. We do not sell or price the water activities – that is the diver operator’s service. Book both: transport with us, water leg with your chosen dive operator.
Beaches – resort day without the resort
Royal Commission Beach: the signature Yanbu beach – turquoise water, soft white sand, family-friendly shallow entry, rarely crowded. Free entry. The best “pin a towel” beach within easy reach of the city. Good for a 3-4 hour beach day with a driver waiting.
Corniche (~11 km waterfront promenade): a free, 24-hour public space with playgrounds, picnic areas, cycling paths, and cafes. North Corniche = traditional parks, ATV rentals, camel rides. South Corniche = modern marina, youth park, dining, cleaner beaches. Evenings are busiest and most atmospheric.
Al Bahr Beach / Al Nakheel Beach: free public sands, calm water, basic facilities. Al Nakheel is quieter with palm-shaded spots.
Al Nawras Island: day-visit island with boat access – operators run day-trip excursions including snorkel gear and lunch. (Check current access – some sources report a bridge, others boat. Confirm with the operator.)
Old Town (Yanbu Al-Balad)
Yanbu’s old town is a heritage district of coral-stone houses with traditional rawasheen (wooden lattice balconies), narrow winding alleys, and a tangible sense of the Red Sea port history that predates modern Saudi Arabia. T.E. Lawrence passed through during the Arab Revolt. Free to wander, photogenic, calm outside prayer times.
Yanbu Heritage Museum
A small maritime and heritage museum in the old town area – exhibits cover Yanbu’s Red Sea trade history, pearl diving, and traditional boatbuilding.
- Entry: approximately ~SAR 20 (Needs verification – single source)
- Hours: reported ~09:00-17:00 (Needs verification – confirm locally)
- Best for: history context before or after the old town walk
Yanbu Lakes & Fish Market
The Yanbu Lakes are man-made recreational lakes with gardens and pedestrian bridges under the Royal Commission – a pleasant evening family stop. The fish market is best visited 06:00-09:00 when the daily catch comes in; grilled fish vendors serve fresh samples from ~SAR 35-50.
How to get to Yanbu
| From | Distance | Drive time | Best vehicle |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jeddah | ~300-330 km (coastal Route 5) | ~3.5-4 h | Sedan or larger |
| Madinah | ~170 km | ~2-2.5 h | Sedan |
| Yanbu Airport (YNB) | ~10 km | ~15 min | Sedan – airport transfer |
Honest day-trip math: Jeddah>Yanbu round driving alone is ~7-8 hours of the 10-12 hour day-tour card. That leaves ~2-4 hours at the destination – enough for a beach stop + lunch + corniche walk, or a pre-booked dive session that starts from Jeddah.
Book a private transfer: See Jeddah to Yanbu Taxi or Madinah to Yanbu Taxi. Fixed per-vehicle pricing, door-to-door.
Getting around Yanbu
Yanbu city is compact – the old town and corniche are a short drive apart. For beach/dive days, a driver for the full day is the practical approach.
Fixed-rate private car: From 125 SR for in-town rides. The full Yanbu rate card is published on the Yanbu Taxi Service page. No meter, no surge.
