Taif Travel Guide 2026 – Cable Car, Rose Farms & Mountain Escape

Taif is Saudi Arabia’s mountain escape – sitting at ~1,800 metres in the Hijaz range, offering 30°C summer days when Jeddah and Makkah are above 40°C, with a cable car, rose farms, historic palaces, and a honey souq. This guide covers a driver-guided day loop, the top attractions, and exactly how much it costs to get there without self-driving the Al-Hada switchbacks.

Is Taif worth visiting?

Yes – especially as a same-day escape from Jeddah or Makkah. Taif has been the kingdom’s summer retreat for centuries, and for good reason: the climate is genuinely cooler, the mountain scenery is dramatic, and the attractions (cable car, rose farms, souq, Al Shafa) fill a comfortable 12-13 hour day trip.

Best for: families, couples, and small groups who want a nature-and-culture day without an overnight stay. Rose enthusiasts should visit March-April during the harvest. Everyone else will enjoy October-April for the best weather.

How long: a day trip from Jeddah (12-13 h with driver) is sufficient for the cable car, Shubra/souq stop, rose farm (in season), and Al Shafa views. Add a second day if you want to hike Al Shafa or visit Al Rudaf Park properly.

Top attractions in Taif

Al-Hada Cable Car (Telefric Al Hada)

The cable car is Taif’s signature attraction – a ~4.2 km gondola ride dropping ~600 vertical metres between the upper station on Al-Hada ring road and the lower station at Al Kar Tourist Village in the Naaman valley. The ride takes ~15-20 minutes each way with panoramic windows over the mountain escarpment.

  • Hours: generally ~09:00-18:00, extended to ~19:00-20:00 in peak season; Friday opens early afternoon. Closes in high winds – confirm same day before driving.
  • Fare range: SAR 70-300 per adult round-trip depending on the current fare tier – several prices are reported by different sources; confirm at the station before queuing.
  • Queue: can exceed 1 hour mid-afternoon on summer weekends and public holidays – arrive by 09:00 to avoid the wait.
  • Lower station (Al Kar): restaurants, shops, water attractions, toboggan (SAR 30 extra). Budget ~90 min with kids.
  • Best vehicle: Sedan to the upper station, then walk to the gondola; driver waits at the upper parking.

Shubra Palace (exterior stop)

Shubra Palace (Qasr Shubra) is an early 20th-century Ottoman-style palace with distinctive rawasheen balconies and symmetrical facades set in gardens. The interior is under restoration – confirmed by 2026-dated reports – making this an exterior-only photographic stop within the loop.

  • Current status: exterior stop (restoration ongoing; interior not open to the public)
  • Visit duration: 15-20 minutes for photos and garden walk
  • Location: city centre, walk from souq

Taif Rose Farms (seasonal: mid-March to April)

Approximately 70% of Saudi Arabia’s rose oil comes from the Taif rose (Rosa damascena trigintipetala), harvested annually during a ~35-45 day window. Two farms welcome visitors:

  • Al-Ameer Farm (Al-Shafa road) – free entry, distillation demonstrations, direct rose water and oil sales. Best visited dawn to mid-morning when distilleries are running.
  • Al-Zahrani Farm – nearby, similar experience.
  • Rose oil prices: approximately SAR 100-300 per small bottle depending on purity.

Out of season (May-February): farms are far less active. Some distilleries still operate small-scale production and may offer tours – call ahead.

Old Souq & Honey Market

Taif’s souq near Shubra Palace is free to wander and is the best place to sample two of Taif’s signature products: rose products (water, oil, soaps, perfumes) and honey (Sidr honey is the premium variety – tasting is encouraged). Also look for dried figs, handwoven baskets, and local pottery. Rose tea from dried petals is available at nearby cafes.

  • Hours: daily, busiest evenings
  • Best vehicle: Sedan – city centre parking available
  • Entry: free

Al Rudaf (Al Raddaf) Park – family option

A large family park with rose gardens, evening musical fountains with fire shows, a small zoo (lions, tigers, giraffes), camel rides, and paddling areas. Open daily, busiest evenings and weekends.

  • Entry: free (or nominal – reported as “a few riyals”)
  • Visit duration: 2-4 hours with children
  • Best for: families, evening entertainment

Al Shafa Village & Wadi Mitna

Al Shafa sits ~2,500 metres above sea level, south of Taif – cooler, with juniper forests, honey farms, fruit orchards, and trekking routes. Wadi Mitna offers small waterfalls and cold pools via an easy ~1 hour marked trail.

  • Distance from Taif: ~30-40 min drive
  • Best time: early morning, late afternoon
  • Graded: easy (Wadi Mitna trail), moderate (Jabal Dakka summit ~2 h round trip)
  • Bring: a light layer (significantly cooler at 2,500 m), sturdy shoes

Winning point: thesaudiguides and houseofsaud cover Taif editorially but neither offers a booking CTA – readers leave their pages to search for transport separately. Our post has a bookable driver loop with fixed per-vehicle rates at every touchpoint (cable car, farms, souq, Al Shafa). Strongest differentiator: the Al-Hada switchback road framed as “leave the driving to us” – competitors assume self-drive. This is our strongest city-guide wedge because Jeddah day-trip demand is high and our route pages (23499, 23429) already serve the corridor.
