Every Umrah and Hajj trip comes down to the same handful of journeys: the airport to your hotel, the hotel to the Haram, Makkah to Madinah, and the return to the airport. Get those right and the logistics stop getting in the way of the pilgrimage. This guide covers every leg – the fastest option, the cheapest option and the most comfortable option – with fixed, published fares where we provide the ride.
How do pilgrims get around Saudi Arabia for Umrah and Hajj?
| Journey | Fastest | Cheapest | Best for families |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jeddah Airport > Makkah | Haramain train (~54 min) | SAPTCO bus | Private transfer from 200 SAR |
| Madinah Airport > hotel | Taxi (~25-30 min) | Bus | Private transfer from 150 SAR |
| Makkah > Madinah | Haramain train (~2 h 20 m) | Bus (~7 h) | Private car from 400 SAR |
| Hotel > Masjid al-Haram | Walk / taxi | Makkah Bus | Private car with waiting |
| Ziyarat sites | Private car (driver waits) | – | Private car from 450 SAR |
The short version: the train is fastest between the holy cities, the bus is cheapest, and a private car is the only door-to-door option – which is why families and groups choose it. Full detail on each leg below.
Getting from Jeddah Airport to Makkah
Most pilgrims land at King Abdulaziz International Airport (JED). You have three options:
- Haramain train – the airport has its own station on the HHR branch line, and the run to Makkah takes about 54 minutes; you still need a taxi at the Makkah end.
- Private transfer – from 200 SAR for a sedan, with meet-and-greet in arrivals, flight tracking and a complimentary Miqat stop on request. See the Jeddah Airport to Makkah transfer.
- Bus – cheapest, slowest.
For the full comparison, read our Jeddah Airport to Makkah guide.
Getting from Madinah Airport to your hotel
Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz Airport (MED) is about 15-21 km from the central hotels and Masjid an-Nabawi – a 25-30 minute drive. A private transfer starts at 150 SAR, with direct drop-off at your hotel or the mosque area. See the Madinah Airport to hotel transfer or the full Madinah Airport taxi service.
Makkah to Madinah: train, bus or private car?
This is the one long leg every pilgrim makes. In short:
- Haramain train – ~2 h 20 m, the fastest; you still pay for a taxi at both stations.
- SAPTCO / NW bus – the cheapest, but ~7 hours.
- Private car – ~4.5 hours, from 400 SAR per vehicle, door to door with luggage handled.
We break the whole decision down – real times, fares, the station-to-Haram last mile and who each option suits – in our dedicated guide: Makkah to Madinah Transport: Train vs Bus vs Private Car.
Getting around Makkah
- Uber / Careem – available, but fares are estimated and surge at prayer times, and cars are often diverted away from the closest Haram roads.
- Green taxis – plentiful around the Haram, metered and variable.
- Makkah Bus – the city network (makkahtransit.sa); cheap, but not built for luggage.
- Walking – hotels inside the Haram ring are walkable; outer districts are not.
For hotel-to-Haram runs with luggage or elderly family, a private Makkah taxi with a fixed fare and a driver who waits is the stress-free choice.
Getting around Madinah
Madinah is calmer than Makkah: the Haram area is walkable, and taxis or a private car cover Quba, Uhud, Qiblatain and the rest of the ziyarat circuit. See the Madinah taxi page for in-town and ziyarat fares.
Ziyarat transport (Makkah, Madinah, Taif, Badr, Khaybar)
A ziyarat tour needs a car and a driver who waits at each site – apps end the trip and leave. We run fixed-price ziyarat tours from the holy cities, including Makkah Ziyarat, Madinah Ziyarat, Taif Ziyarat, Badr Ziyarat and Khaybar Ziyarat.
The 2026 Nusuk rule: pre-booked transport is part of your Umrah visa
For 2026, Umrah visas are issued through Nusuk, and the verified bundle requires a Nusuk-approved hotel plus pre-booked ground transport (airport transfer and intercity), with a booking reference number. In plain terms, your transport is no longer an optional extra – it is part of the visa process, which is exactly why pilgrims book a fixed-price transfer in advance. Confirm the current requirements on the official Nusuk portal before you apply. (Owner sign-off required before publish.)
This guide is informational; verify current rules before travel. We cannot advise on legal, religious, or visa matters.
